Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems

Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems are a requirement for any organisation or workplace that has any type of workplace hazard.  These can include (but are not limited to) the operation of plant, the storage and use of chemicals and manual handling.  An Occupational Health and Safety Management System helps to manage and fulfil an organisation’s occupational health and safety legislative requirements.

An Occupational Health and Safety Management System will outline and assist with the following:

  • Creating an OH&S policy for the organisation stating its commitment to health and safety within the organisation;
  • Establishing the responsibilities and accountabilities for all levels (workers, managers and senior management) within the organisation in regards to health and safety;
  • Assisting with training requirements throughout all levels within the organisation in regards to health and safety;
  • Developing hazard management strategies and providing aid in conducting risk assessments. This enables the work force to be trained how to implement the hazard management strategies that have been developed; and
  • Developing the tools to facilitate the hazard management strategies, for example, checklist tools for workplace inspections or emergency tools to enable the development of emergency procedures.

For an organisation to develop and maintain the Management System, continuous consultation with all levels of the organisation needs to be undertaken.
